SWI designed a free-surface flow constructed wetlands and
quiescent anaerobic fermentation pit to treat municipal effluent for the Town of Dove
Creek, Colorado. The system was designed to bring a 0.115 MGD flow rate with
Influent BOD typically 200 mg/L and TSS typically near 350 mg/L to the following
discharge limits:
BOD ................................................. 30mg/L
TSS ................................................. 75 mg/L
Fecal Coliform ....................................... 2,000/100mL
Residual Chlorine .................................... 0.5mg/L
pH. .................................................. 6.5-9.0
The constructed wetlands replaced 9600 sq. ft. of existing natural wetlands along Dove
Creek under permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The system has been
operating since 1999, and has eliminated the Town's effluent disposal violations and
reduced total electrical power consumption.
An added benefit to this project is the constructed wetlands provided habitat for redwing blackbirds and other native species.
This project was completed in 1999.
